Paper options

Matt paper

Matt paper has a smooth, non-reflective surface and is the easiest option to write on.

Matt paper is also suitable when you want readers to be able to write or sketch in the book.

Silk paper

Silk paper has a smooth surface and subtle sheen that helps colours, photographs and graphics appear clear and vibrant.

Silk is often a good all-round choice when the artwork contains strong colour alongside fine detail and text.

Gloss paper

Gloss paper has a shiny, reflective surface that strengthens colour and contrast. It is most suitable for books containing photographs, graphics and promotional imagery.

It works particularly well for bold digital artwork, action comics, children’s graphic novels and books containing vivid illustrations.

How to prepare a graphic novel for printing

Design and formatting guidance

Upload your artwork in a single multi-page PDF in the correct reading order.

The first page of the file should be the first printed page of the document and can also be your front cover should you want your covers.

Check our online preview carefully to confirm that every page appears in the correct position.

Allow space for the binding edge

The pages are punched along the selected binding edge. Keep text, images, pages numbers and other important elements away from this area. As a general rule we recommend at least a 15mm margin on the binding edge and 5mm on all other edges.

Bleed

If a photograph, colour or background should extend to the trimmed edge, include 3 mm bleed around each relevant outer edge.

Use high-resolution images

Images should be approximately 300DPI.

Avoid enlarging low-resolution photographs, screenshots or graphics downloaded from websites, as they may appear blurred or pixelated when printed.

Colours

Set your artwork up in CMYK where possible. An exact colour match cannot be guaranteed due to differences within the digital print process.

Booklet pagination

For saddle-stitched booklets:

  • Page one will be the front cover.
  • Page two will be the inside front cover.
  • Page three will be the first right-hand internal page.
  • The penultimate page will be the inside back cover.
  • The final page will be the back cover.

The total page count must be divisible by four.

Previewing and proofing

Doxzoo’s online previewer acts as your digital proof. Check it carefully before completing your order.

  • All pages are included and in correct order
  • The document has the correct orientation
  • Double sided pages turn in the intended direction
  • The binding is positioned on the correct edge
  • Text and important images are clear of binding holes
  • Full-page background extend to the bleed area
  • Covers and tabs are positioned correctly
  • Fonts, paragraphs and images are displayed as expected.

For an important project or larger order, consider ordering one copy first. A physical proof gives you an opportunity to check the paper, covers, colours, binding and overall finish before ordering more copies.

FAQs

Looking for more information about our novel printing ? Keep reading for answers to some of our most frequently asked questions!

Booklets are best for shorter graphic novels. Paperback books provide a traditional bookshop style finish and Hardback books are ideal for a keepsake deluxe print.

Yes. There is no minimum order quantity, so you can print one proof copy, a short run or more than 1,000 copies.

Silk paper provides a smooth finish with clear colour and less reflection than gloss. Gloss can make bold, saturated artwork appear more vibrant, while matt gives illustrations a softer and more traditional appearance.

Matt paper is a popular choice for black-and-white graphic novels, manga and hand-drawn artwork because it has a non-reflective appearance and complements linework and shading.

Paperback and hardback covers can include a printed spine when the spine is wide enough. The width depends on the page count and paper stock, so use the Cover Dimensions Calculator before preparing the artwork.

Upload individual pages in normal reading order, not printer’s spreads. Double-page artwork should be divided into two consecutive pages within the PDF.

Raster artwork and images should be approximately 300 dpi at their final printed size. Avoid enlarging low-resolution images, as this can make linework and text appear blurred.

Booklets are available with same-day, next-day, two-day or five-day production. Paperback and hardback books are generally available with two-day or five-day production.

Available turnaround times depend on the specification and quantity selected. Large orders may require additional time, and Royal Mail delivery estimates are not guaranteed.

Yes. A proof is strongly recommended before printing a larger quantity. It allows you to check colour, line detail, text size, page order, trimming, cover placement and binding.

Same-day production is available for selected binding styles when ordering by 1 pm Monday to Friday. Hardback wires are available with two-day or five-day production.

Turnaround options depend on the product, specification and quantity selected. Large orders may require additional time, and Royal Mail delivery estimates are not guaranteed.
