We all know that Christmas isn’t going to be what we would term normal this year, and one element that we’re going to be forgoing is the usual festive bash, whether that’s with our friends or colleagues.
If you’ve been tasked with organising a work Christmas party that’s held virtually, how can you make sure that it’s fun for everyone and still makes everyone feel like they’re part of the team? We’ve got some tips to help you host a fun virtual festive bash.
Firstly, you have to decide on your budget (just as you would any other year) and choose a date and time for your party.
Think about how high-tech you want to go with it. As the BBC recently noted, there are a host of companies offering virtual events, ranging from providing immersive online ‘rooms’ that include a variety of performances or even dance floors, and even online murder mystery parties.
If you’ve got a reasonable budget for your festive party, this could be a good option (and it will take a lot of the organisation off your shoulders).
You can also consider arranging a food and drink delivery for your team, so that you can all enjoy a meal, or at least some nibbles, and a tipple together without each person having to spend money on their own food.
Again, there are a number of businesses that are offering this kind of service, so there are plenty of options available.
Of course, you could take any of these ideas and come up with your own, personalised iteration. One idea is to send each person attending the party a festive box, with instructions to only open it when you’re all in your virtual party together.
As RTE pointed out, these boxes can include anything you want them to, from mini bottles of drinks and snacks to party hats. You can also come up with activities to do together, which is important to create a bit more of a party atmosphere in an online setting according to Peter Mahony, founder of the Laughter Lounge Comedy Club.
He told the news provider that his company started offering festive parties, with boxes of goodies, to help the venue survive this winter.
Among the items included in their box is a bingo card, with one of the comedians from the club doing the calling of the numbers.
You could come up with something similar for your team, or even invent your own game that is personal to your business. If you need help printing props, you can get in touch to find out more about our document printing services and other products to get what you need in time for your party.
Also consider creating a special party playlist that you can share with everyone attending on the day so that you’re all listening to the same tunes. That’s especially important if you decide to hit the virtual dance floor.
As Mr Mahoney said: “The Christmas party at the end of the year is a great opportunity for employees to let off a bit of steam. I think it would be a big mistake for companies to abandon the Christmas party due to Covid-19.”
