What is Perfect Binding?

Perfect binding is a method of bookbinding where the pages of a book are glued together along the spine using a strong, flexible adhesive. A cover (usually a heavier cardstock or thick paper) wraps around the glued pages to form a clean, professional, and durable finish.

This method is commonly used for paperback books, magazines, catalogues, manuals, and reports. It creates a square, flat spine that allows the title, author name, or branding to be printed along the spine.

When Should You Use Perfect Binding?

  • Books with 20+ Pages: Ideal for thicker books and multi-page documents.
  • If You Need a Printable Spine: Unlike saddle-stitched books, perfect binding gives you a spine where you can print titles or branding.
  • Professional Look on a Budget: It looks sleek and professional but is cheaper than hardcover or case binding

  • Up to 10 book sizes

What is the difference between perfect binding and other types of binding?

  • Perfect Binding: Uses glue along the spine, creating a flat, professional look.
  • Saddle Stitching: Uses staples along the fold, good for thinner booklets.
  • Spiral Binding: Uses a plastic or metal coil, allowing the book to lay flat.
  • Hardcover Binding: A rigid cover is used, making it more durable but also more expensive.

What can I print on the spine of a perfect-bound book?

Book title, author name, brand name or logo and design elements.

Can I print on the front, back, and spine of the cover?

Yes, you can have full customisation of the front cover, back cover, and spine. You can add images, logos, branding, and colours.

What file format should I use to upload my design?

PDF, Word or Powerpoint.

What is "bleed" and why do I need it for perfect binding?

Bleed is the extra space beyond the edge of your design, typically 3-5mm. This ensures no white space or unprinted edges are left after the book is trimmed.

Can I get a discount for bulk orders?

Larger print runs have lower costs per unit. However if you are printing a bulk order, then please get in touch via live chat we will be happy to look into giving you a discount.

Can I get a sample of my book before printing the full order?

We don't offer free samples, however we also do not have a minimum order quantity so you can order just 1 copy to act as your own sample.

Design Tips For Perfect Binding

1. Page Layout & Margins- Set Safe Margins: Keep at least 10mm (0.4 inches) of safe space from the edge of the page for text and images to prevent them from being cut off during trimming.

2. Spine Design- Calculate Spine Width: The spine width depends on the paper thickness and number of pages

3. Cover Design- Check our help article on how to use the cover design tool.

4. Typography & Fonts- Legibility Matters: Use easy-to-read fonts, especially for book titles, subtitles, and spine text. Avoid overly decorative fonts for key information.

5. File Preparation- Export your design as a high-resolution PDF with embedded fonts and images.
