Because in the midst of the global pandemic, it’s going to be harder for lots of us to be with our family and friends in person this Christmas. So sending custom Christmas cards or wrapping paper is a lovely little extra touch to let someone special know you’re thinking of them.

Customer printed wrapping paper is also a perfect present accessory in light of the recent announcement that some major supermarkets are holding back on their glittery Christmas cards, wrapping paper and gift bags this year, in a positive push to reduce plastics pollution.

Morrisons, Waitrose and John Lewis have said they won’t be using glitter in any of their own-brand Christmas products this year, Asda is launching its first sustainable Christmas range, and Tesco only uses edible glitter.

Sainsbury’s has also said that this year “customers will find no glitter on our Christmas cards, wrapping paper or gift bags.” It has also reduced glitter used on crackers, decorations and flowers in the ‘fight against pollution’.

“Every time a cracker is pulled, or a card is opened, plastics have been used … but just the once,” said Christine Bryce, Morrisons’ Home Director. “We’ve taken glitter and plastic out of our festive range this year, so that our customers can enjoy their festivities without worrying about the environmental impact.”

And this is no small impact. Morrisons estimates that it will be removing a massive 50 tonnes of plastic from its shelves during the whole festive period as a result of the glitter ban and its drive to reduce plastic in its Christmas ranges.

Games and gifts will now be made out of paper, metal or wood, and designed to be kept and reused. Christmas crackers will be made from Forest Stewardship Council accredited cardboard, and decorated with a metallic based ink instead of glitter. And there’ll be less plastic packaging on cards and decorations, as well as more felt, hessian and wooden decorations being stocked.

Waitrose is also making waves for plastic reduction, too. In September it announced that it would be selling rolls of ‘unwrapped’ Christmas wrapping paper to eliminate the use of single use plastic that can’t be recycled.

“Customers are looking to make Christmas just as special this year, but removing unnecessary plastic means they can gift without worrying about the environment and rubbish that can’t be recycled,” said Nikki Grainge, Packaging Development Manager at Waitrose & Partners.

“We’re constantly working to reduce single-use plastic and we’re on a roll with the removal of shrink wrap on gift wrap and many other products, including tinned food and tissues,” Nikki said, “and we’re constantly moving closer to phasing out non-recyclable plastic by the end of 2021.”

Make this the perfect year to leave behind buying glittery gift wrap too, and create your own custom wrapping paper to make Christmas even more special.
